Adolescent Literacy: Policies, Research & Resources

Research and policy recommendations from both the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English support balanced, rather than bottom-up, step-by-step, "turn-the-page" instruction and drills as the best basis for adolescent literacy development. Reading is a complex process; students need to be taught and practice comprehension and study strategies with real texts. These reports also call for further research and a variety of approaches.
